Dear Resident
We write to inform you of impending highway maintenance work that will be
taking place in your area of the City. The work will involve the complete reconstruction
of the Gibbet Hill Road carriageway between the Kenilworth Rd and Kirby Corner
Rd junctions and is necessary to improve the ride and durability of this important
strategic route, which serves a high number of visitors to the City and local
amenities.
The method of resurfacing to be employed is called ' ex-situ recycling',
whereby existing carriageway material is removed, treated and reintroduced into
the road construction by our specialist contractor, Colas Ltd. This method will
represent a significant cost saving in comparison to conventional resurfacing
methods, as well as having substantial environmental benefits.
For this work to be carried out in safety, it will be necessary to close
Gibbet Hill Rd to all through traffic for the duration of the works. The traffic
diversion route will be via Kirby Corner Rd, Sir Henry Parkes Rd/Charter Ave,
A45 and Kenilworth Rd. Access for residents of Moreall Meadows and Cryfield Heights
(and dependant roads) will be maintained via Kenilworth Rd, although access may
be interrupted on the day that we cross over the face of these junctions. Emergency
access will be maintained at all times and pedestrian routes will not be affected.
Work will commence on Monday 19th July 2004 and is programmed to last
for 8 weeks. The road will be split in to four consecutive phases of work
to minimise disruption for those entering the road for access. Phase 1 will run
from Kenilworth Rd to the first roundabout (at Rootes Hall) and will take 4 weeks
to complete. Phase 2 will follow on from the roundabout to University Road (east)
and will last for 2 weeks. Phase 3 will be from University Rd up to the Scarman
Rd roundabout and take 1 week. The final phase will finish at Kirby Corner Road
and will take a further week. The circulatory of the roundabout at Scarman Rd
will be reconstructed on Sunday 15th and 22nd of August 2004. Please note that
the repair technique we are using is weather susceptible and therefore the dates
above are approximate, however we will endeavour to follow them as closely as
possible.
